Arts & Social Sciences Complex Phase 1, Simon Fraser University
Burnaby, B.C.

Inspired by Arthur Erickson's original design, Simon Fraser University's newest development provides a striking and sustainable home for several growing departments.

The first phase of development on the Simon Fraser University Arts & Social Sciences Complex will provide a new home for the Schools of Archaeology, Criminology, Clinical Psychology, First Nations Studies, and the Centre for Forensics Research. The project will provide centrally scheduled classrooms, lecture theatres and microcomputer classrooms for undergraduates, as well as spaces for reading, studying, and socializing. Ultimately, the development will be spread over five or more phases, consisting of some 530,000 square feet of classroom, office, and lab space.

The first phase of the new Lot C Precinct development establishes the organization of the precinct has begun to develop the look and feel of the larger complex. The Arts & Social Sciences Building links into the existing Quadrangle at the concourse level and extends the concourse east to an existing bus loop. Off of this new spine is situated a C-shaped plan on two levels, providing a landscaped courtyard facing east that will be contiguous with a planned north-south landscape spine. The complex provides a new lecture hall just off of the existing quadrangle concourse, enclosing a glass covered courtyard that will serve as a new socializing space and the new entrance to the Archaeology Museum.

The buildings materials and architectural expression borrow heavily from the original 1960’s Erickson buildings rhythm of building elements and strong structural expression.
