Busby Perkins+Will has been commissioned by the Ar-Riyadh Development Authority to design 3 prototype stations for its new LRT line. At present, the firm is developing the design for three stations, each of a different condition (at grade, above grade, and below grade), at Al Ma'ther, King Fahd and Prince Sultan Ibn Salman Ibn Abdul Aziz Stations.
The design of the stations is predicated on Busby Perkins+Will's belief that the success of the line is contingent on its ability to offer patrons a transit experience of the highest quality. To this end, we have established six major design objectives: passenger comfort and a high quality experience will be achieved through features including fully shaded, air-conditioned platforms, clear views, and extensive landscaping; clear, open platforms, high quality-lighting, and system-wide alarm and surveillance technology will ensure patrons' safety and security; smooth flowing access points, clearly organized wayfinding, and high security quality signage will increase public accessibility; the accessibility demonstration of public values will be achieved through the use of sustainable technologies and strategies, including photovoltaic panels (represented in blue which will potentially be the largest PV installation in the region; individual station design will encourage a sense of community ownership, as well as improving wayfinding and ensuring that sustainable design elements are customized to their environment; and finally, kiosk pads and bridge and tunnel structures will allow for future transit-oriented developments.
