2002 The Wood Design Awards, Citation Award

Busby Perkins+Will Architects were selected to design two skytrain stations for the Millennium Line of the Rapid Transit Project in the Greater Vancouver area. Both stations are designed to maximize safety, security and comfort for transit users. Essential elements are open, clear spaces, the use of glass for visibility, and the provision of generous canopies for rain and wind protection. The intention is to encourage use of the transit system, through accessibility and safety. Both stations incorporate a high-tech look, with user-friendly warmth.

The Gilmore Station is a "sister station", and will be the first element in an emerging new mixed-use area at the western edge of Brentwood Town Centre.

This station is designed to focus on a public entry plaza at the corner of Gilmore Avenue and Dawson Street. The "transparent" building makes a feature of the various elevators, stairs and escalators, celebrating the movement of people as they come and go. The plaza will incorporate a Public Art component, a retail kiosk, and urban trees to create a significant public space. Wood and glass are major building components of this station. The white canopied roof can be seen from a distance; the inside of the roof is a Timberstrand wood product providing visual warmth. Designlines developed a cast steel kingpost, a custom building component of this roof structure.

Future development is anticipated to be built up to and around the station, so the walls and roof structure are designed in a modular fashion, to allow for future reconfiguration and adaptation of the components.
