Busby Perkins+Will has long held the reputation for designing and master-planning exceptional and sustainable higher education facilities.
The firm's
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology is renowned for its cultural sensitivity and
York University's Computer Sciences Building
for its green performance.
Current projects push the environmental envelope further. Laurentian University's
Living with Lakes Centre is being designed to go
beyond a LEED Platinum rating and for a 2050 climate. University of British
Columbia's
Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability brings together academia, industry and government to provide solutions for
sustainability. Also at UBC, the
Buchanan Complex revitalization addresses the importance of renovating existing buildings as a way to
reduce emissions from both an operations and embodied energy standpoint.
Proving they do more than design forward-thinking facilities, the firm recently surveyed 20 Canadian universities about their operations
and curriculum in effort to understand what action universities are taking to reduce climate change. The survey gathered information about
curriculum, research, waste management, energy consumption, water use, administrative leadership, and other initiatives such as transportation
services and long-term plans.
